Sustainability Pledge

Hop Pickers Rural Retreats recognises that it has a responsibility to the environment beyond legal and regulatory requirements. We are committed to reducing our environmental impact, conservation, using local produce, energy efficiency and environmentally friendly business practices. We will encourage our guests, and suppliers to do the same.

The Site Manager is responsible for ensuring that this sustainability pledge is implemented, however, all employees have a responsibility in their area to ensure that the aims and objectives of this pledge are met.

Aims

We endeavour to:

  • Comply with all relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Continually improve and monitor environmental performance.
  • Continually improve and reduce environmental impacts.
  • Incorporate environmental factors into business decisions.
  • Increase guest and staff awareness.
  • Provide information to guests on best practices in our Visitor manuals.

Recycling and Waste

  • We have a sewage treatment plant which creates much less waste and in comparison to a septic tank it has an important extra stage which makes the effluent discharge substantially cleaner and better for the environment.
  • Clear and obvious signage and information to encourage guest recycling is provided.
  • Secondary bin checks to ensure recycling will be accepted.
  • Seek to buy recycled and recyclable products.
  • Reuse and recycle all paper where possible.

Energy and Water

 We will seek to:

  • Reduce the amount of energy used as much as possible.
  • Switch off lights and electrical equipment when not in use- for example when a property is vacant we will switch off all power to this.
  • Adjust heating with energy consumption in mind.
  • Only use LED light bulbs
  • Save water where possible and reuse water used for washing vegetables and rinsing dishes caught in a washing up bowl in the garden

Local Suppliers

We will:

  • Use local small businesses for our welcome hampers. For example – locally sourced bread and milk from our community shop in Alfrick, less than 3 miles away.
  • Use suppliers with eco-friendly packaging. For example – Bramely products use 100% recyclable and biopolymer packaging meaning sugar cane is used in the manufacturing process rather than fossil fuels. This also relates to our choice of laundry company who wash at a lower temperature and use fabric laundry bags instead of plastic.

Office Supplies

We will:

  • Favour more environmentally friendly and efficient products wherever possible.
  • Reuse and Recycle everything we are able to.

Transportation

We will:

  • Make additional efforts to accommodate the need of those using public transport or bicycles.

Maintenance and Cleaning

We will:

  • Use cleaning materials that are as environmentally friendly as possible – for example smol dishwasher, laundry and cleaning supplies.
  • Use materials in any refurbishment that are as environmentally friendly as possible.
  • Only use licensed and appropriate organisations to dispose of waste.
  • Make and mend practices rather than buy new.

Monitoring and Improvement

We will:

  • Comply with all relevant regulatory requirements.
  • Continually improve and monitor environmental performance.
  • Continually improve and reduce environmental impacts.
  • Incorporate environmental factors into business decisions.
  • Review this policy and any related business issues quarterly.

Culture

We will:

  • Update this policy at least one annually in consultation with staff and other stakeholders where necessary.
  • Involve staff in the implementation of this policy, for greater commitment and improved performance
  • Work with suppliers, contractors, and subcontractors to improve their environmental performance.
  • Use local labour and materials where available to reduce CO2 and help the community.

Future Plans

We are:

  • Looking to invest in an electric car charger for guest use to encourage visitors who drive electric vehicles.
  • Developing our woodland walk and habitat to dramatically improve the local habitat and ecosystems in partnership with the Malvern Hills District Council’s Sustainability grant.
  • Solar power project to use install solar panels to the south facing section of the field and use heat source pumps for our swimming pool and further significantly reduce our electrical usage. This will mean our cabin, hut, main house with office, swimming pool and hot tubs will all run off solar power.
